Originally from the Piedmont region of Italy, in Argentina this grape produces wines that can be lighter-bodied and fruity, full of cherry and plum flavors, with light tannins and moderate acidity. Using concentrated fruit from older vines, and especially when oak aged, Bonardas can also be big, fruity, dense and tannic wines with deep color and fig and raisin characteristics. Tilia's version shows aromas of ripe red fruits with a hint of violets and anise. It is a lush, ripe red, with dark cherry fruit and licorice notes layered with a healthy dose of mocha and spicy black pepper notes. The finish is soft and sweet, with round, velvety tannins - think beef stew for this one. Named after the linden (or tilia) tree commonly found in Argentina, Tilia wines are made at Bodegas Esmeralda, a Catena family winery in eastern Mendoza dedicated to the value segment of the Argentine domestic market. The grapes are sustainably farmed from vineyards in the eastern and southern areas of Mendoza and the wine was aged 6 months in French and American oak.
