Straight-forward and easy to drink, this medium-bodied red from Portugal emits scents of red fruit, herbs, pepper, and an earthy musk. It also gives off aromas of Esteva, or Gum Cistus, an indigenous Douro shrub related to the Rock Rose, which adds distinct floral and pine resin notes to the aroma. Rated the number 1 pick in an October 2009 New York Times wine column on still reds from Portugal: 'lively and dry, with plummy, earthy flavors that were altogether pleasing.' For the price, the wine shows loads of finesse. It has a softness and approachability that makes another glass seem like a great idea.
